Liverpool player to take on new role under Arne Slot

Arne Slot is set to make a big change after replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Slot faces the near-impossible task of replacing the iconic German after being officially unveiled as his successor last month.

“Jurgen left the club in a very good place, he left the team in a very good place,” Slot said of the task of replacing Klopp. “Ultimately, we would all love to see Liverpool a little bit higher than third place and that’s the challenge we’re facing now – to build on what we have.”

The former Feyenoord boss will begin Liverpool’s pre-season in the coming weeks but has already begun preparing for next season, according to reports, and is ready to use a player in a new position.

Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo is currently on international duty and impressing for the Netherlands, leading the goalscoring charts with three goals.

After a difficult period last season, in which many Liverpool fans questioned his performances, Gakpo enjoyed a strong end to the season after returning to the left wing position he had predominantly played in for PSV Eindhoven.

Gakpo has excelled in the same role for the national team, but Slot appears to have different ideas for his compatriot.

The 25-year-old has played in every position across the attacking line under Klopp but will be used exclusively as a centre-forward for the club under Slot, according to Football Insider.

Gakpo will face competition from club-signed Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota for a starting spot in midfield, with all three capable players operating on the wings.

Liverpool were linked with signing a new left-wing striker in the summer but rejected the opportunity to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

The Magpies needed to offload players to meet Premier League profit and sustainability standards and reluctantly considered the possibility of Gordon, a boyhood Liverpool fan, moving to Anfield.

It was reported that Newcastle wanted to include defender Jarell Quansah in any deal and Liverpool had no interest in allowing the promising academy player to leave, which led to negotiations breaking down.

Gordon was believed to be interested in a swap deal and it remains to be seen whether Slot will reignite the club’s interest in the remainder of the window.
