Birmingham man sentenced to 7 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for illegally carrying a gun, according to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

Peter Gupton, 41, was sentenced to 84 months in prison after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm.


The plea agreement stated that Birmingham police officers responded to the scene of reported shootings in Woodlawn on Feb. 23, 2023. Gupton fled the scene on foot, but officers found him behind a dumpster and detained him.

Gupton then led officers to a loaded pistol he had hidden behind a bush at Christ Health Center. The pistol was reported stolen and officers also found a shell casing near the area of ​​the shooting.

The ATF investigated the case along with the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer prosecuted the case.
