Savannah Roqaa, Founder of The Savvy Baker

Savvy Baker was founded by Savannah Roqaa in 2020, in what started as a lockdown project.

“I was bored and wanted to try baking, just like everyone else,” Savannah said. YorkMix. “I left them for my friends and they posted them on their social media, and before I knew it, I had old friends, friends of friends, and people I didn’t know messaging me asking to buy some!”

Savannah then created an Instagram page for her cakes and began selling from there, before opening her first pop-up and having a “huge queue of hours of customers wanting to try my brownies – I couldn’t believe it”.

She then built a bakery inside a warehouse in Seacroft, Leeds, and opened a cafe in Roundhay, Leeds, with her partner Jordan Simms.

Now, after “hundreds of pop-up stalls, markets and pop-up shops”, The Savvy Baker has arrived in York!

“York is a great location, it’s a completely different landscape to our other stores. The mix of local community, small businesses and tourism really gives York a unique advantage.”

Inside Savvy Baker

Savvy Baker opened on Saturday, July 6, and we were “sure there would be some hiccups, but to our surprise, everything went very smoothly. I think we just needed more chairs and tables, as we had a line of customers wanting to sit inside.”

Right now, the cafe is mostly takeout, with some casual seating inside.

Savvy Baker will be open daily from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

“We’re so excited to show York what we have to offer – once you try a brownie, you’ll be hooked!”
