Birtley runners complete 136-mile charity relay for The People’s Kitchen

Runners from Birtley Athletics Club have completed a 134-mile charity relay for The People’s Kitchen.

The continuous run took place between York and Birtley, with £850 currently raised for the charity, which is dedicated to supporting vulnerable and homeless people, tackling hunger and loneliness.

Starting at historic York Castle on Saturday 15 June, runners followed the National Cycle Routes through Yorkshire, Teesside, County Durham and Newcastle, before stopping at The People’s Kitchen, before returning to Birtley Golf Club. The marathon effort took just 22 hours and 15 minutes to complete.

Tommy Milmore, a senior coach at the club and a member of the BAC committee, organised the fundraising run, and the team were impressed with what they saw when they visited The People’s Kitchen. He said: “The staff are all volunteers and were working non-stop, whether it was cooking, serving, clearing tables or handing out food bags.

“Their workload and commitment was very impressive. It was very humbling and gave us all a sense of ‘counting our blessings’ and being grateful for what we have.”

The People’s Kitchen operates 365 days a year, serving between 250 and 300 meals daily, and the organization relies entirely on volunteers and public donations, with no government funding. Maggie Pavlou is a trustee of The People’s Kitchen and also ran the first leg of the relay challenge.

She said: “It’s really heartwarming when organisations like Birtley Athletics Club decide to help us, as fundraising efforts like this are essential to help us continue our work. We are incredibly grateful to Birtley Athletics Club for running this 136-mile race on our behalf.

“Fundraising efforts like this allow us to make life a little easier for many people by sharing hot meals and packages of clothing, hygiene products, food and other essentials.”

If you would like to contribute towards the £850 raised towards the £1,000 target, donations can be made on Birtley Athletic Club’s JustGiving page here.
