Glasgow great-grandmother celebrates 100th birthday with red wine and homemade pasta

An Italian great-grandmother has shared her secret to living a long and happy life as she celebrated her 100th birthday at a Glasgow care home.

Italia Pagliocca, who celebrated the milestone on Saturday (July 6), says red wine with homemade pasta for lunch and quality family time are responsible for her longevity.

The proud matriarch has plenty of family to spend quality time with, including two children, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, aged between three and 21.

Chester Park Care Home in Kinning Park hosted an Italian-themed party to mark the occasion, with residents, family and staff enjoying a special performance by a locally trained opera singer, as well as traditional Italian food and drink.

Michele Pagliocca, Italia’s son, said: “We are incredibly proud that our mother has reached this milestone birthday. Not many people can say they have reached 100 and I am so happy that we were able to enjoy the day together and reflect on the incredible memories over the years.

“My mother lived a life full of rich experiences; she traveled extensively when she was younger, cooked amazing food, and invested so much in her family relationships that it resulted in a close, loving family unit that we all benefit from.

“My mother’s life motto was to prioritize relationships and enjoy the little moments that make each day special. I think this positive outlook on life and surrounding herself with happy, healthy relationships is one of the reasons my mother made it to 100 – she just enjoys life.”

“She comes from a farm in Italy, so food and drink played a big part in her upbringing. Meats, cheeses, wine and olive oils were always on her table, and formed many of her delicious home-cooked meals. She is so talented in the kitchen that she could make something from scratch and it always turned out delicious.”

Chester Park Care Home is located in south-west Glasgow and cares for 85 residents. It provides nursing and residential care, as well as palliative care for individuals. Continuing the Italian theme, staff members and residents at Chester Park have been learning Italian at a local language school in an attempt to ease the transition from Italy to the care home.

Sunita Poddar, CEO and Founder of Oakminster Healthcare: “We believe our care homes are an extension of our residents’ family homes, we want them to feel special and cared for and we are delighted that Italia and her family were able to celebrate with the rest of the Chester Park residents this weekend.”
