“There’s no business like show business”

“There’s no business like show business”

Every time you read the newspapers, turn on the radio or look at social media, there is another show business talent lost to the craft. A few months ago, we lost Bernard Hill, which made me think how lucky I was to have known him and worked with him on a film called No Surrender in 1985.

The film starred Bernard alongside Michael Angelis and the screenplay was written by the fabulous Alan Bleasdale, who of course created Boys from the Blackstuff (which gave Bernard the iconic role of Yosser Hughes with the wonderful ‘Gizza Job’ expression). The film No Surrender has become a cult film and has an extraordinary cast.

It was also Joanne Whalley’s first feature film. Many of the actors who played small roles went on to become big things.

Even Grammy Award winner Elvis Costello makes a cameo appearance as a second-rate magician whose rabbit dies. Which brings me to my role.

I play a washed-up gay comedian who gets his ass kicked in front of a very tough audience on New Year’s Eve in a very tacky event venue. Okay… get the jokes out of the way now before I continue…

I was so excited when I was asked to play this special role and I had to pinch myself. Me in a feature film on the big screen!

All I could think about was Hollywood next. In my dreams.
