Shooting on Interstate 65 in Birmingham leaves 1 dead; victim found in sedan that crashed into concrete median

A man was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 65 in Birmingham Wednesday night.

Shots were fired shortly before 11 p.m. on northbound I-65, just past the 32nd Avenue exit.

Sergeant LaQuitta Wade said North Precinct officers were initially dispatched to a report of a single-vehicle crash. While en route, they received updated information that a driver had been shot.

The victim, an adult male, was found injured in the driver’s seat of a sedan. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported him to UAB Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

Wade said paving crews currently paving I-65 southbound in that area heard the gunshots and then the crash.

“They didn’t see anything,” Wade said.

Two shell casings could be seen in the roadway at the 32nd Avenue exit. It was not immediately clear if there were more shell casings further up the interstate.

The victim traveled at least 100 meters before hitting the concrete median.

Wade said it was too early to know whether the victim was targeted.

“At this point, we have no idea what could have happened here on the interstate,” she said, asking witnesses to come forward if they were in the area and saw or heard anything.

At 1 a.m., traffic was being diverted from I-65 to 32nd Avenue North.

The victim is Birmingham’s 82nd homicide this year. Of those, eight were deemed justifiable and therefore not considered criminal.

Across Jefferson County, there were 105 homicides, including the 82 in Birmingham.
