Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier reacts on Instagram as England reach Euro 2024 final after beating Netherlands

Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier reacts on Instagram as England reach Euro 2024 final after beating Netherlands

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier will compete in the Euro 2024 final.

England got the job done on Wednesday night, and they did it in incredibly dramatic fashion. The Three Lions beat the Netherlands 2-1, with Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins scoring a 90th-minute winner.

It was a stunning end to England’s best night of the Euros as they finally began to find their feet after some worrying displays.

They did so with Kieran Trippier in the starting line-up as the Newcastle United defender retained his place in the side. Trippier was expected to start despite Luke Shaw’s return to fitness, and that’s exactly what happened.

Paul Merson had stated before the game that it was best to start Shaw on the left, but Gareth Southgate took the opposite approach and started with him.

Ollie Watkins takes England to the final

Trippier played just 45 minutes of the semi-final against the Netherlands and did not experience the kind of special moment he had in the World Cup semi-final six years ago. That night against Croatia, he was almost the hero when he put England 1-0 up with a free kick.

In the Euro 2024 semi-final, it was Watkins who took centre stage. He combined with Cole Palmer to produce a stunning finish at a time when extra time seemed inevitable.

But Watkins, who had replaced captain Harry Kane, scored a late winner as England prepare to face Spain in the final.

That Watkins goal means England will compete in consecutive European Championship finals.

The latter ended in disappointment as the Three Lions were defeated on penalties by Italy. Kieran Trippier started the game and actually helped England take the lead at Wembley. He provided the assist for Luke Shaw, who had given his country an early lead before Italy responded.

It was a heartbreaking night for Trippier and co, and the 33-year-old is desperately hoping Sunday ends differently.

The Toon veteran is already looking forward to the final and took to Instagram to celebrate England’s last-gasp victory over the Netherlands.

He wrote: “What a night!! Euro 2024 FINAL, let’s go!!!”

Trippier’s post on his official Instagram account received a number of responses, with Paul Dummett showing his support.

There was also a comment from former England striker Daniel Sturridge, who wrote: “Get in there tripps!!”

Newcastle defender not at his best against Netherlands

Although there were huge celebrations following England’s victory, the semi-final was far from Trippier’s best night in a Three Lions shirt.

He played just 45 minutes before being replaced by Luke Shaw, having struggled attacking once again.

Trippier is a great player and is technically excellent, but there is a lack of balance when he is on the left – especially as he does not have a proper winger in front of him. It has been a problem for England throughout the tournament, and it will be interesting to see whether Southgate continues with Trippier on Sunday.

While he wasn’t great in the final third, Trippier certainly performed well defensively, as he has done throughout the tournament.

Now Southgate must decide whether to continue with Trippier against Spain, which would mean facing teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

That will be a tough task for Trippier, who is one game away from taking home the football for England.
