Wrexham left red-faced as ‘released’ star still has contract

Wrexham were left red-handed after an administrative error saw the club release a player still under contract, writes TONY ROBERTSON.

The League One new boys are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

They have risen through the divisions since the takeover, earning back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two.

However, after the season concluded, the club announced a long list of eight players who would be released.

One of those included 30-year-old defender Jordan Tunnicliffe, who made 39 appearances for the club over two seasons with the Red Dragons.

Tunnicliffe said goodbye to his former teammates and was removed from the club’s WhatsApp group.

But an administrative blunder left Tunnicliffe still under contract at the club for another 12 months.

The Daily Mail has revealed that there was an error when Tunnicliffe’s contract was originally drawn up, with the deal ending in June 2025 instead of June 2024.

A club statement to the Mail confirmed that Wrexham were aware of the situation and were in talks with the player to resolve the issue, which had also been referred for an independent determination.
