Newcastle United receive ‘surprising’ response over Anthony Gordon’s Liverpool move

Andy Cole would be “surprised” if Anthony Gordon left Newcastle United this summer, urging the 23-year-old to seriously consider what he is doing if he is pushing for an exit.

In late June, United’s bid to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) saw talks between the club and Liverpool over a transfer for the former Everton winger. As it turned out, the money could be raised from the sales of other assets and so now no key players need to be sold this summer.

But it was in the aftermath with Gordon away from Tyneside, in Germany with the England team trying to reach successive European Championship finals, that the damage was done. Rumours suggested he was swayed by the interest as there appeared to be a genuine possibility of a move.

“I would be very surprised if Newcastle United were looking to sell him,” former striker Cole told Betfred. “I know there’s all this talk about Financial Fair Play, but Newcastle must have realised they would be in that position and if they were in that position then why would they look to sell one of their best players? I would find that astonishing.”

The 52-year-old seemingly has nothing to worry about, with Gordon remaining a key part of Eddie Howe’s plans until and perhaps beyond the expiry of his current contract in 2026. When he returns from his summer duties, the club are expected to give him a “warm welcome”.

However, if Gordon were to push for a move to Anfield again, Cole would suggest the Magpies’ No.10 would be making a serious mistake.

He added: “If Gordon insists on moving to Liverpool, then where would Liverpool play him? Liverpool would have to move someone to accommodate him. From the outside looking in, it’s a bit crazy if there’s any truth to the speculation.”

No follow-up talks have taken place with Liverpool, who have Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo due to return from international duty too before the start of the new season. Reports of a bid from Manchester City over the weekend were more recently dismissed.
