Newcastle are admirers of Jonathan David and have made an enquiry to Lille over the striker’s condition, according to FootballTransfers.

The striker has been linked with a move to the Premier League and there is an appreciation of his versatility within the club’s hierarchy, but, like Chelsea, no further contact has been made since.

Manchester City are still fans of Guimaraes but it will take a substantial offer from Newcastle to sell him to the Premier League champions this summer, although we know the midfielder, who is open to a move to the Etihad, will not do so.

Newcastle are hopeful of reaching the Champions League and know that if they fail to do so they could see stars depart next year.

The club are in the market for a right winger, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Leeds’ Crysencio Summerville and Wolves man Pedro Neto all interested. However, no contact has been made with either player’s camp as of yet.

Noni Madueke is also much admired, but a deal would be difficult to close.

The Magpies have brought in Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director and have recently held recruitment meetings.

Who is Paul Mitchell?

Mitchell was once an innocuous League One footballer playing on a muddy pitch for MK Dons. Today, he is one of the most sought-after sporting directors in the world.

Mitchell did not extend his stay at Monaco beyond last summer, where he stayed for three years.

In 2010, Mitchell was appointed as MK Dons’ first head of recruitment. After a successful spell there, he joined Southampton, then in the Championship, in a similar role.

It was in his first campaign that the Saints were promoted to the Premier League. Mitchell began working with Mauricio Pochettino the following January, bringing new stars to the south coast.

Mitchell recruited players such as Nathaniel Clyne, Maya Yoshida, Paulo Gazzaniga and Steven Davies before joining Pochettino at Tottenham in 2014.

Following an alleged falling out with Daniel Levy, Mitchell joined RB Leipzig as head of recruitment and development.

He joined Newcastle as sporting director this summer to replace Dan Ashworth, who left for Manchester United.
