M62 traffic updates live as motorway closed due to ‘serious accident’ involving two lorries and a car

A section of the M62 is closed in one direction due to a serious accident.

The westbound carriage is closed between junctions 9 and 8 following this morning’s incident.

The ECHO understands the accident happened at around 5am. The image used in the story shows traffic queuing at junction 10 of the M62.

National Highways issued an update on X, formerly Twitter, saying “The M62 remains closed westbound J9 (M6) – J8 Burtonwood in Cheshire. This is due to a serious collision involving two lorries and a car. This closure will be in place throughout the morning.”

45 minute delays

National Highways has advised there are 45-minute delays on the M62 eastbound this morning.

A spokesman said: “The M62 remains closed westbound J9 (M6) – J7 Rainhill in Cheshire.

“@CheshireRCU is commencing a comprehensive investigation and complex recovery operation. There are delays of 45 minutes approaching the closure at J9 westbound.”

20 minute delays

National Highways has issued an update this morning following the closure of the M62. A spokesperson said there are delays of 20 minutes and two miles of congestion in the area.

One lane remains closed between J7 and J8 eastbound.

Severe delays on the M62

Our travel partner INRIX said: “M62 Westbound closed, severe delays due to accident, two lorries and one car involved from J9 A49 Newton Road (Winwick) to J7 A57 Warrington Road (Rainhill Stoops).

“Congestion at J6 (M57 Tarbock Island) for eastbound traffic, and back after J10 (M6 Croft Interchange) for westbound traffic. Also affecting routes via Warrington, Winwick, Bold Heath and northbound traffic on the M6 ​​as far as J23 (Haydock).

“One lane remains closed on the eastbound lanes due to a previous accident. In progress since approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning. Cameras show that the backed up traffic is currently being cleared.

“Detour – Via the A49 Winwick Road through Warrington, then the A57 Warrington Road through Great Sankey to the Rainhill Stoops Interchange to return to J7.”

Drivers are advised to find different routes

National Highways has urged drivers to find another route following the crash on the M62 this morning.

The company added that the highway will be closed during the “morning peak period.”

A spokesperson said:

Motorists in the North West are warned that the M62 is closed following a serious collision in Cheshire. National Highways was alerted to the collision involving a car and two HGVs on the westbound carriageway between Junctions 9 (Warrington) and 8 (Burtonwood) at 5.30am on Thursday 11 July 2024.

“Emergency services are in attendance and the road is likely to remain closed during the morning peak period. Heavy congestion is likely and drivers are advised to find an alternative route.

“One lane of the M62 is also closed in both directions between junctions 7 and 8 following an earlier collision in which the barrier sustained damage.”

People ‘trapped’ in vehicles

Cheshire Fire Brigade confirmed they are at the scene of the accident.

They confirmed the incident involved two trucks and a car.

Crews are working to rescue people trapped at the scene, a spokesman added.

Diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M62 westbound at J9
  • At the roundabout, take the 1st exit and follow the A49 south until the A574 roundabout
  • At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and follow the A574 roundabout to the Westbrook Way roundabout.
  • Take the 2nd exit and follow Westbrook Way to the Burtonwood Road roundabout
  • Take the 4th exit and follow Burtonwood Road to then rejoin the M62 westbound at J8

Closure likely ‘all morning’

National Highways has confirmed the closure will remain in place for several hours.

They said:

All emergency services are on site and this closure is likely to remain in place throughout the morning.

The M62 is currently closed towards Liverpool following a serious accident.

The ECHO understands the westbound carriageway between junctions 9 and 8 was closed shortly after 5am following a collision between two lorries and a car.
