Micah Richards has proposed a radical overhaul of England’s squad for their Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland next Saturday, which will leave Liverpool fans with mixed feelings.

Both Reds in Gareth Southgate’s squad were kept in the dark as the Three Lions struggled to victory over Slovakia after extra time on Sunday, with Trent Alexander-Arnold having lost his starting place after the first two group games and Joe Gomez yet to feature in the tournament.

Speaking on The Rest is Football, the pundit called for a tactical overhaul that would involve a three-man defence and two wingers, but he would only start one of the two Anfield players.

Richards explained: “Gomez played what, 15 games for Liverpool at left-back? He was very good in that position, but I would go with Kyle Walker. Play him at left-back.

“The problem is they want (Kieran) Trippier to go forward and get involved in the play. I would just go and play Trent on the right wing, and get into a three at the back.”

We could take the suggestion of playing Trent as a full-back, allowing him to run down the flank with ease, as he did for Liverpool, knowing there are three defenders behind to cover him.

However, with Luke Shaw looking increasingly unlikely to feature at Euro 2024, it beggars belief that Gomez – the only other defender with any real experience at left-back – will be overlooked in favour of Trippier, Ezri Konsa and possibly Walker, if Southgate takes Richards’ suggestion into consideration.

Either way, we don’t see the England boss making such a radical change to his lineup, especially as he would need to bring in two centre-backs due to Marc Guehi’s suspension… although the Reds’ No.2 would be a perfectly capable option to start in either position in defence on Saturday.
