Cody Gakpo demonstrates rare quality that Arne Slot will love in his Liverpool team

Cody Gakpo’s forensic approach to his preparation for Euro 2024 games was clear throughout the Netherlands’ campaign – and the new Liverpool boss will be optimistic he will find a kindred spirit when they begin working together on Merseyside.

The forward has been a key member of Ronald Koeman’s Germany side, starting all three of his nation’s games at the tournament so far. He has repaid the faith shown in him by his manager with talismanic displays in the Dutch attack too – contributing two goals in the group stage.

Having secured the Netherlands’ place in the last 16, the 25-year-old has taken an academic approach to his work as he revealed he has watched all three of his upcoming opponents’ league games so far. Already known for his studious demeanour at Anfield, the Reds forward is leaving nothing to chance ahead of the clash with Romania.

As the Netherlands chase a place in the quarter-finals, Gakpo revealed he has been doing his homework on which team he will face next. Speaking ahead of the showdown at Munich’s Allianz Arena, he admitted: “To be honest, I’ve watched all three of their games.

“They have some good players, I can’t say one in particular is the best, but as a team they were very good,” he continued, while highlighting Romania’s strengths. “In the attacking line, they have some dribblers like (Ianis) Hagi and (Dennis) Man, and stable midfielders as well. And the right-back is good.”

With Gakpo set to eventually link up with Reds boss Slot following the conclusion of his national team commitments this summer, his dedication off the pitch will not have damaged his reputation with the new head coach. The former PSV Eindhoven man impressed during the build-up to last season as he bounced back after a mixed start to the campaign.

The versatile ace has 23 goals in 79 appearances for the Merseysiders and finished the previous term with 16 goals and six assists in 53 appearances. His best form last season arguably came in the final eight games, when he racked up five goal involvements with three goals and a pair of assists – providing cause for optimism ahead of 2024-25.
