McKenna signs for Birmingham City Women

Northern Ireland defender Rebecca McKenna has joined Women’s Super League club Birmingham City Women.

The 23-year-old, who has 43 caps for her country, has signed a two-year contract with the Blues Women.

She moved from Women’s Championship club Charlton Athletic to the Barclays WSL, for whom she played 25 times last season.

McKenna began her career at Glentoran before moving to Linfield. After winning three titles with the Belfast Blues, she moved to England in 2021, signing for then Championship side Lewes Women.

She stayed at Lewes for two seasons before spending her final season at Charlton.

She told Birmingham City Women: “I want to come in and get started now. I’m excited to meet the girls. In the long term, this club is what matters.

“I spoke to Amy (Merricks, Birmingham City Women’s head coach) and seeing where they want to take this club is what attracted me.

“I was only coached by her for a short period of time, but knowing the impact she had in such a short time says a lot about her as a coach.”

McKenna’s move to Blues Women follows fellow Northern Ireland defender Laura Rafferty’s move from Southampton Women to Rangers Women.

Other players from the Northern Ireland senior women’s squad are expected to be transferred in the coming weeks, including striker Simone Magill, who has left Aston Villa Women, and attacking midfielder Caragh Hamilton, who joined from Lewes after the team were relegated from the Championship last season.

Northern Ireland’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 qualifiers against Malta and Bosnia and Herzegovina is expected to be announced tomorrow by senior women’s national team boss Tanya Oxtoby.
