Milan and Manchester United see Lukaku as plan B for Zirkzee

Perhaps fittingly, considering both clubs share a similar nickname – The Devil and the Red Devils – they appear to be chasing the same goals this summer too.

It’s no secret that both have their sights set on Bologna striker Zirkzee, who has a €40m release clause in his contract that can be activated by either.

The issue, therefore, is to reach an agreement on personal terms, which Milan did weeks ago, and pay the €15m commission demanded by agent Kia Joorabchian.

The Rossoneri refuse to hand over that amount of commission, seeing it as a matter of principle and precedent, which has allowed Manchester United to enter the fray.

It would be a return to Old Trafford, where the 31-year-old previously played from 2017 to 2019, before his €74m move to Inter.

He was deeply unpopular and struggled at Manchester United, so a return would inevitably be controversial, but manager Erik ten Hag apparently feels he could get the best out of him.
