Official Newcastle United Announcement – 2 July 2024:

Spanish and French Champions League entries confirmed in pre-season schedule, along with return of Sela Cup –

Newcastle United will welcome European opposition to St. James’ Park this summer, with UEFA Champions League sides Girona FC and Stade Brestois set to feature in ‘The Sela Weekender’.

Kicking off two days of pre-season action, the Magpies open the Sela Weekender with a friendly against Spanish LaLiga side Girona FC on Friday 9 August (7.30pm kick-off) before the welcome return of the Sela Cup the following day.

Supported by the club’s title sponsor, the Sela Cup returns for the second year running – with a new format that has evolved to offer both men’s and women’s teams the chance to be crowned champions.

Building on last season’s promotion campaign, Becky Langley’s Newcastle United Women will be looking to secure a place in the Barclays Women’s Championship by challenging soon-to-be confirmed opposition for the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup trophy on Saturday 10 August (kick-off 1pm).

Eddie Howe’s side will continue to prepare for the new season with the aim of retaining their Sela Cup men’s crown – won during the inaugural tournament in 2023 – when they take on French Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois in a showdown later on Saturday afternoon (4pm kick-off).

Speaking about The Sela Weekender, Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales said: “We are thrilled that our men’s and women’s teams will be returning to St. James’ Park for a two-day festival of football. It will give fans the chance to support our preparations for a great 2024/25 campaign.

“Hosting Champions League-calibre opposition reinforces Newcastle United’s appeal at the highest level of European football, and I’m sure every visiting club will do their part to create a great weekend.

“We would once again like to thank our partners Sela for their support and expertise, which will ensure that the Sela Weekender is an unforgettable event for fans of all clubs involved.”

Ibrahim Mohtaseb, Senior Vice President at Sela, added: “The Sela Weekender is a fantastic way to kick off the new season, offering Newcastle United’s men’s and women’s teams the chance to win silverware.

“As title sponsor of the club, Sela is committed to redefining the matchday experience for football’s most passionate and dedicated fanbase. The Sela Weekender will bring thrilling European competition to St. James’ Park ahead of what promises to be a spectacular 2024/25 season.”

Day tickets for Friday or Saturday cost £20 for adults and £10 for walk-ins, while access to the premium bars is available for £25 and £15 for each match day.

Season ticket holders and members will be able to purchase tickets beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, with general on-sale beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 5.
