Cody Gakpo’s Euro 2024 display gives Liverpool a major transfer headache amid Gordon and Summerville interest

Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo became Euro 2024’s top scorer (three goals) with a sublime strike to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead over Romania in their last-16 clash.

The 25-year-old took on two Romanian defenders, cut inside and unleashed a lethal shot that beat Florian Nita in goal.

Gakpo’s performances on the left side of the Netherlands’ attack at Euro 2024 showed the world what he is like at his best.

The former PSV Eindhoven man is best on the left flank, where he can cut in to shoot, provide an assist or combine with teammates. He should not be isolated up front as a striker, left to feed on crumbs.

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who knows Gakpo from his time in the Eredivisie, is expected to take immediate note.

He may not be an elusive dribbler like Luis Diaz, but he carries a threat that can be devastating to the opposition.

Despite playing a secondary role to the Colombian on the left flank, Gakpo has still contributed the same number of Premier League goals (13).

Interestingly, Gakpo’s performance at Euro 2024 will give Liverpool a major headache ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Reds are reportedly in the market for a left-footed striker, with Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon on their radar.

According to a report in De Telegraaf this afternoon, Liverpool have enquired about Summerville’s situation.

Summerville caught the eye of Leeds last season, leading the way with 19 goals and nine assists (17 big chances created) in 44 league appearances.

Gordon was also electrifying for the Magpies last season, scoring 11 goals and providing ten assists (16 big chances created) in 35 Premier League appearances.

The long-time fan was reportedly open to returning to Liverpool but talks broke down over the weekend. The Reds remain interested in his services.

However, while Gordon and Summerville are promising recruits, Gakpo is already in Liverpool’s plans and could be a better fit than the pair if Slot trusts him to start next season.

His performances at Euro 2024 showed his ability to take on defenders, create chances and score crucial goals.

If Gakpo can replicate his Dutch form at Anfield, he would be far more impactful than either Summerville or Gordon. Playing in his preferred left-sided attacking role, he could become a star for Liverpool.

Gakpo represents a much safer bet than inexperienced youngsters like Summerville and Gordon.

Next season could be Gakpo’s breakout year at Liverpool, and Reds fans everywhere will be eagerly awaiting his return to Anfield.
